Coldplay - Violet Hill video
Coldplay is promoting their new album "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends" with a strong online presence and we dig it. We first heard about the new album when the song "Violet Hill" was released as a free digital download by the band's website.
The recent success of online downloads by Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails no doubt influenced Coldplay's decision to create a strong online advertising campaign to mix in with their traditional ads. The album is due out in 2 week and the band already has 2 singles released in heavy circulation, had given free concerts, has an iTunes commercial, received very good reviews, and now is population websites with interactive ads.
We like this trend of bands allowing more of their music to be tested online. Weezer spent the weekend on Sirius radio playing all the songs off their new album due out this Tuesday to help reassure us that the haven't lost a step.
Below are samples of one of the Coldplay "Viva La Vida" flash-based ads on sites like E!. When you rollover the banner it expands and you can listen to the 2 new singles. Hopefully as the release date for "Viva" gets closer we can expect more songs to be added to the list.

i think that coldplay's willingness to put a song up for download is daring and makes a statement about how they feel about downloading. i believe they're right, however- fans have been flocking to download the song and are now hungry for more. that's advertising at its best, not to mention a trendy itunes ad.
