At the end of the year, which is only a little bit off, we were going to name the 1st Annual Dave and Thomas Asshole of the Year Award. There's lots of candidates out there. We were angling toward Lindsay Lohan or Barry Bonds.
Both are cancers on society.
There were a few others to consider, but then came the story of Megan Meier. We think it's safe to say we have a winner.
Everybody. Meet Lori Drew. Our Asshole of the Year!
Picture this. Last year, a middle age mother jumps on MySpace to harass a former friend of her daughter. And by harass we mean pose as a young boy from Florida who gains the trust of Megan Meier, a 13-year old girl who had battled depression over the years. Knowing all of Megan's faults and innermost secrets, Lori Drew gathered others to help pretend to be a young, 16-year old boy named Josh Evans.
Drew and her co-horts got to know Megan and then maliciously started to break her down with violent messages. They began circulating false bulletins and spreading vulgar rumors about Megan.
According to Ron Meier, Megan's father, the last message that Lori Drew and Co. sent to Megan was:
"Everybody in O'Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you."
Why is this so important?
Law enforcement claims there are no laws on the books to enforce what Lori Drew did. Hmmmm ....that's interesting.
We're not gonna claim we're lawyers but we find it hard...no, impossible, to believe that no law out there protects a minor from harassment of an adult who conspired and designed a plan to systematically destroy a child. And encouraged others to join in.
(from Bluemerle) Lori Drew explained the communication between the fake male profile was (aimed) at gaining Megan's confidence and finding out what Megan felt about her daughter and other people. Drew stated she, her daughter, and Ashley all typed, read, and monitored the communication between the fake male profile and Megan. Drew went on to say, the communication became "sexual for a thirteen year old." Drew stated she continued the fake male profile despite this development.And the local law enforcement finds no laws that were violated.
According to Drew "somehow" other "my space" users were able to access the fake male profile and Megan found out she had been duped. Drew stated she knew "arguments" had broken out between Megan and others on "my space". Drew felt this incident contributed to Megan's suicide, but she did not feel "as guilty" because at the funeral because she found out "Megan had tried to commit suicide before."Wow! What an asshole Lori Drew is made to be.
One of the most sickening moments of the story is when Lori Drew allegedly found out about Megan Meier's tragedy after an ambulance arrived at the Meier's house and called others involved to tell them not to mention what they had done with the MySpace accounts.
(From St. Charles Journal) The neighbor from down the street, a single mom with a daughter the same age as Megan, informed the Meiers that Josh Evans never existed.
She told the Meiers that Josh Evans was created by adults, a family on their block. These adults, she told the Meiers, were the parents of Megan's former girlfriend, the one with whom she had a falling out. These were the people who'd asked the Meiers to store their foosball table.
The single mother, for this story, requested that her name not be used. She said her daughter, who had carpooled with the family that was involved in creating the phony MySpace account, had the password to the Josh Evans account and had sent one message - the one Megan received (and later retrieved off the hard drive) the night before she took her life.
"She had been encouraged to join in the joke," the single mother said.
The single mother said her daughter feels the guilt of not saying something sooner and for writing that message. Her daughter didn't speak out sooner because she'd known the other family for years and thought that what they were doing must be OK because, after all, they were trusted adults.
On the night the ambulance came for Megan, the single mother said, before it left the Meiers' house her daughter received a call. It was the woman behind the creation of the Josh Evans account. She had called to tell the girl that something had happened to Megan and advised the girl not to mention the MySpace account.
Neighbors and locals of the Drew's are none too happy, either. At the site RottenNeighbors, the Drews are outed for their address and a rather 'lively' forum on what people think of the Drews is included.Many are even protesting the Drew's company, Drew Advantage. Drew Advantage (or Drew Ad Vantage, alternate spelling) publishes a direct-mail mini-magazine with coupons and advertisements that's mailed to St. Charles residents.
While the mob mentality disturbs me, it is entirely appropriate for St. Charles residents to take their copy and start calling the advertisers, telling them that they will not patronize their business as long as they continue to advertise in this publication. Be polite about it, and suggest they call Lori Drew themselves and ask about it.
The most likely outcome is that several will pull their ads, and that will put the financial hurt on her.

There are laws to cover this, the police just don't care to press the issue. This story came out into the open because of a similar story. In the other case, a girl (around 17 or 18) was being cyberstalked and harrased by a boy (around 17, too). The boy heightened his cyberattacks to threats of rape and other heinous physical assualts. The result was that the police and CITY attorney charged the boy with littering. Yes, you read that right: LITTERING!!!!
Until we can change the institutional attitude of law enforcement (both police and attornies) to consider online harassment the same as any other harassment we will have this "there is no law that covers this" BS.
This woman, Lori Drew, should be charged with depraived indifference to life, child abuse, and stalking. She should be required to register on any child abuse registries which would eliminate her ability to be involved with other kids--either at school, church, sports leagues, etc.

Ms. Drew used the same same exact mode of operation as a child predator enacts in the seduction of a child.
Drew posed as a member of the opposite sex and spent weeks and weeks luring this girl into a relationship.
But yet it went further. The adult Drew formed a heated relationship with the 13 year old girl. She worked hard to gain the girl's confidence. She exploited the girl intimately by posing as a boyfriend. Drew groomed her victim in the same method a child predator does.
Then the woman emotionally raped this child. She took her supposed love and sexual stimulation and crushed the girl emotionally with them.
This girl was mentally raped by a mother and her employee. This adult and her friends played this girl into an emotional high... and then pulled the plug when it would inflict the highest possible damage.
There are manslaughter convictions on the books that won based on looser ties to a person's death than this.
Ms. Drew is the clear definition of a child predator. She used the internet to stalk, entice and lure a 13 year old girl into a romantic, sexually sparked, full fledged relationship.
Other child predators use the same vile tactics to seduce and lure a girl into trusting them. Other child predators use the internet to roll play the relationship, a clear example of "inflict harm and mental distress".
This is so far beyond "Harrassment", this is full fledged exploitation of a child.
Is the local police of this county out of their minds to think that NO charge will stick?
Is the local District Attorneys office serious if they don't think this girl's rights have been thoroughly trampled by a grown woman?
Does the DA really expect people to roll over while this woman goes without so much as even a misdimeaner charge?

The Drews, in a final act of ultimate hate, seek to hurt this family who lost a beloved baby. She seeks to harm them financially....
Just as MS. Drew attacked an innocent little girl, Ms. Drew now attacks a grief stricken family - again seeking to harm someone's very life.

On Wednesday, October 21st, city officials enacted an ordinance designed to address the public outcry for justice in the Megan Meier tragedy. The six member Board of Aldermen made Internet harassment a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.
Does this new law provide any justice for Megan? Does this law provide equitable relief for a future victim or actually weaken the current law?
I reject the premise of this new law and believe it completely misses the mark. The reasoning behind this opinion is that city officials have consistently treated this case as an Internet harassment case instead of a child welfare/exploitation case.
Classifying this case a harassment issue completely fails to address the most serious aspects of the methods Lori Drew employed to lead this youth to her demise. The Vice disagrees that harassment was even a factor in this case until just a couple of days before Megan's death.
Considering this case a harassment issue is incorrect because during the 5 weeks Lori Drew baited and groomed her victim, the attention was NOT unwanted attention. It was not harassment at all. It was invited attention. Megan participated in the conversations willingly because she was lured, manipulated and exploited without her knowledge.
This law willfully sets a precedent that future child exploiters and predators can use to reclassify their cases to harassment issues. In effect, the law enacted to give Megan justice, may make her even more vulnerable. So long as the child victim doesn't tell the predator to stop, even a harassment charge may not stick with the right circumstances and a good defender.
Every aspect of this case follows the same procedural requirement used to convict a Child Predator. A child was manipulated by an adult. A child was engaged in sexually explicit conversation (as acknowledged by Lori Drew herself). An adult imposed her will on a child by misleading her, using a profile designed to sexually or intimately attract the 13 year old Megan.
Lori then utilized the power she had gained over this child to cause significant distress and endangerment to that child. She even stipulated to many of these activities in the police report she filed shortly after Megan's death.
We can go on and on here, but the parallels between this case and many other child predator cases that are successfully prosecuted bear striking similarities.
Child Predator laws do not require much more than simply proving that an adult has engaged a minor in sexually explicit conversation. Lori Drew has already stipulated that her conversations with Megan were sometimes sexual for a child Megan's age.
City officials who continue to ignore this viable, documented admission and continue to address this issue as harassment are intentionally burying their heads in the sand, when the solution is staring them right in the face. Why?
On June 5th, 2006, Governor Matt Blunt signed into law stiff penalties for convicted sex offenders. The Vice believes that officials continually reject a child predator classification of this case in order to keep the penalty of this offense out of this harsher realm.
Opponents of this law are active in defeating this law not by changing it, but by disqualifying cases like Megan's from ever being heard.
There are several other child exploitation laws on the books. To date, none of them have even been considered by City, State and Federal officials in this case. I'm outraged that a motion was never even filed, so that the case could at least be argued before a judge or jury.
Those satisfied with this response out of Missouri officials need to think through the effect this law will truly have. It quite honestly has the potential to directly undermine Jessica's law. It quiet easily gives prosecutors a way out of prosecuting child endangerment and child predator cases in the future.
Beware the wolf in sheep's clothing here.

They were part of a little girl's suicide AND they send out junk mail for a living! These people are true scum of the earth!
The naming of Lori Drew has sparked quite a debate indeed. Some major news outlets have chosen to name the perpetrator(s) behind this story such as the New York Times. Some have chosen not to. The mainstream media however has concluded that the blogging community should shoulder the responsibility of first naming the perpetrator behind this story.
The first question I have in this debate is simple. What is new here? Since before the French Revolution, the media has been used to 'out' individuals who's actions seem to bear public relevancy in some way.
Although Lori Drew has not yet been charged in the case of Megan Meier, the media has never required formal charges to be made before running a story. In the case of some journalist like Dan Rather, some media outlets run with stories before even confirming that they're true.
In this particular case, media outlets that have chosen to withhold Lori Drew's identity have done so in consideration of other Drew family members.
I'm wondering if by doing this, the media plans to always withhold the names of interesting persons who outrage the community, if those persons have children. This would certainly be quite a ground-breaking event
Right at this moment, there is a story of a cop who is under investigation in the strange death of one wife and the disappearance of another. The cop in the story has a family, yet the media huddles outside his home relentlessly.
I could go back and list thousands of stories where the media wasted no time in delivering the names and occupations of individuals that were later cleared of any wrong-doing. I've never heard of another instance where the media apologized for naming names.
Don Henley's 'Dirty Laundry' certainly applies well to conduct of most major news outlets.
Lori Drew is a primary subject of the story, she is not a rape victim, and is not a minor. Identifying her breaks no new ground, nor does it deviate from what news outlets do on a daily basis.
I also remind readers that her name and her role in the Megan Meier tragedy were documented as public record. A public record that Lori filed on her own accord. This is a critically important fact in this debate.
News outlets, bloggers and the general public were handed Lori's name and Lori's own self admissions when she herself filed that police report and sought to elevate the entire situation into the public domain.
Had Lori Drew simply acknowledged what she did was wrong, and apologized - the police report that identified her may have never been filed, and the entire situation may have well been kept at the lowest profile.
Will we see the media write about this? Not likely.

That poor excuse of a human being Lori Drew might as well have tied to noose around Megan's neck. How can she get away with this and not be in jail where she belongs???

It is sad what happened to Megan, and Lori Drew should be punished for harrasment, but that is for the Law to do or not do.
At the end of the day, Megan took her own life.
Megan is responsible for that.
Suicide is an act of violence, against one's self and family and friends.
No matter how evil you think Lori is, Megan is no innocent, she committed murder.

It's a violent act. Yes.
But it is not to the survivors to judge the pain of the deceased.
Hopefully when your judgment comes, the maker will be more lenient than you appear to be.

i hope that the people in her town do not give her or her daughter a moment of peace!
sick sick sick, is all that comes to mind, when i think that a grown woman behaved in this manner, she abused a young woman, and needs to be jailed for her actions.
True, this is a terrible thing to do to a sick child, but honestly, who lets a mentally ill 13 year old girl get a "myspace"? Part of the blame goes to the parents as well. That's the problem these days; parents pass the buck(blame) as fast as they can with no one willing to assume the blame. She shouldn't have had a site in the first place and her parents should've realized if she was ill, the last thing the girl needed was exposure on the level of a social network that is full of people who aren't who they claim to be. A myspace boyfriend, give me a break. There is a reason those sites have age limits. If you are a parent and care for you children, monitor them somehow, go online with them and warn them about how dangerous the web truly is. I'm not proposing being over their shoulder every time they get on their computer, but have at least some control of your household and take responsibility for your actions, or lack thereof. I know many will disagree with this view and criticize this entry for not placing enough blame on Lori Drew but I believe everyone else has said all there is to say about her and I'm just adding a different perspective. I will no longer check this site.

Can't the citizens of this town pressure the prosecution to charge Lori Drew with stalking or harassment? Clearly there is case here.
What about those sexual conversations with a minor? Does that not fall under child pornography or something else? The justice system has to do something in this case before someone takes this into their own hands.
